Introduced in 1868 by E. Lukauf to replace the expensive cobalt violet. Originally called "Nuremberg Violet." It began to be used as a pigment after 1890.

Lightfast. Resistant to dilute acids; contact with strong alkalis results in the release of gaseous ammonia. Decomposes in strong acids and alkalis. Hiding power is low. Heat resistance up to 250°C; at temperatures above 400°C in the presence of air, an exothermic chemical reaction may occur, releasing ammonia. pH 2.5 - 4.7; density 2.7 - 2.9 g/cm3; oil absorption 33 g/100 g. It has translucent properties.

May cause slight darkening in oil over the long term.
