Shellac is a natural resinous substance produced by the lac bug, a parasite of certain tropical trees (such as the Ficus religiosa and Ficus benghalensis). This resin covers the bug with a protective film that takes on the insect's color. These films, through a lengthy processing process, produce golden-brown flakes used for finishing and polishing furniture and other wood surfaces.

Good-quality flakes are medium-sized, light in color, and leave a small amount of sediment when they dissolve. This material creates a shiny, velvety feel to the surface. The shellac coating highlights the grain of the wood, giving it an excellent appearance.

Properties:

Chemical formula: C16H26O4

Appearance: Flakes

Color: Light brown, golden

Odor: Odorless

Melting point: 115-120°C

Solubility: Ethanol, isopropanol (dissolves slowly, better with heating). Insoluble in water.

Shellac concentration: 300 g per 1 kg of solvent.

Application: To achieve the desired finish, dissolve shellac flakes in 99% alcohol at a ratio of 300 grams of flakes per 1 kg of solvent. After 24-72 hours, filter the resulting solution and apply the material as a primer to the desired substrate. For a final finish, reduce the shellac concentration: add 200 grams of 99% alcohol to 100 grams of the previously prepared solution. The resulting solution should be easier to apply. If using a swab to apply the material, add a few drops of linseed oil or another vegetable oil. This will lubricate the surface and ensure smooth application. Remove the oil film with rubbing alcohol.
