Red lead is a solid and chemically resistant substance. According to its chemical composition, red lead is lead orthoplumbate Pb2PbO4, the total formula Pb3O4, which has a rich red-orange color and high density.

Story

There is a legend that in the IV century BC. e. The Athenian artist Nikias, for a long time, was waiting for the arrival of a ship from the island of Rhodes with a cargo of white lead, which were made on this island. The ship arrived at the Athenian port of Piraeus, but a fire broke out there and the fire spread to ships with a cargo of whitewash. After the fire was extinguished, the artist climbed onto the deck of one of the affected ships, in the hope that the cargo was not completely lost and that he would be able to find a whole barrel of paint that he desperately needed. In the hold of the ship, he found barrels of whitewash, which, although heavily charred, did not burn. When they were opened, it turned out that they were not white paint, but bright red. So the fire suggested a method for making a new paint - red lead.

Modern production

Red lead is produced in chemical plants by spraying red-hot lead metal in air or oxygen and rapidly cooling the resulting product. Another less common method is to heat and oxidize molten lead in an oxygen atmosphere; the resulting oxides are further ground in mills. Red lead intended for the production of high-quality paint or for filling plastics and rubber is subjected to thorough grinding in jet mills, and intended for the production of batteries, it is obtained from chemically pure lead.
