Sankir is a term of Russian icon painters: a dark paint layer of greenish-brown, greenish or brownish-pink color, which covers the personal parts of the images. More often it is selected by mixing several pigments, sometimes one ocher that is suitable in tone is used. This is the first layer in the structure of the icon-painting work. In the icons of the Byzantine tradition, the sankir usually goes green, while in Russia a warmer shade, close to brown, was preferred. When writing faces, the use of sankir serves as a way to build volume, which is achieved by highlighting the form. Layers of paints are successively applied to the initially laid sankir layer so that each subsequent layer is lighter and smaller in area than the previous layer.
