In addition to the name talc chlorite, synonyms are often used: talc stone, talc carbonate, talc magnesite, as well as soapstone (literal translation of the English Soapstone), goose soap, fatty acid or steatite (French Stéatite). There are also a number of names by area of application: stove stone, pot stone

Talc chlorite is a natural building and decorative material, a rock of metamorphic origin, consisting of talc (40-50%), magnesite (40-50%) and chlorite (5-8%); the mineral and chemical composition are inconstant. The stone is gray, opaque, depending on impurities - white, brown, with a greenish or yellowish tint, and also (less often) red or dark cherry. Shine - matte, silky. Hardness from 1 to 5.5. Density ~ 2.75. In nature, it occurs in the form of sheet deposits.

Talc chlorite began to be mined in Karelia (formerly the Olonetsk province) at the beginning of the 18th century, which is associated with the construction of metallurgical plants, and talc chlorite found its first application in Russia in the metallurgical industry.

This pigment is easily colored with any inorganic pigments. Talc makes up a significant part of talc chlorite.

It is known that the introduction of talc as a filler leads to an increase in atmospheric, water and chemical resistance. The scaly shape of talc particles improves the strength characteristics of coatings, increases their hiding power, opacity and promotes uniform distribution of the coating over the base. The hydrophobicity of talc and its chemical resistance make it possible to obtain waterproof coatings.

The famous statue of Christ the Redeemer is also made of talc chlorite (and reinforced concrete).
