Umber is a mineral brown pigment made from clay dyed with iron and manganese oxides. In composition, natural umber is close to ocher, from which it differs in a high content of manganese (from 6 to 16% in terms of manganese oxide). Umber is resistant to light and alkalis, darkens and reddens when heated.
