Watercolors are composed of finely ground, concentrated pigments and highly purified gum arabic. The high degree of grinding on a ceramic paint mill produces transparent, pure and saturated colors. Watercolors mix well, are easily washed and have high lightfastness.

Ocher, Ocker, old Russian name "Vohra", is the most accessible and widely used mineral pigment. Ocher is a natural powdery or earthy mixture of iron oxides and hydroxides (hematite and limonite) with clay particles.

Yellow and red ochre pigments were used in prehistoric and ancient times by many different civilizations on different continents. Archaeologists date evidence of ochre processing to a lesser extent in Africa and Europe to 300,000 years ago, evidence of ochre use in Australia dates back 50,000 years, and new research has found evidence in Asia dating back 40,000 years.

Pieces of ochre etched with abstract designs have been found at the Blombos Cave site in South Africa, dating back to around 75,000 years ago. In Wales, a Palaeolithic burial known as the "Red Lady of Paviland" due to its red ochre coating has been dated to around 33,000 years BP. Animal images made with red and yellow ochre pigments have been found at the Palaeolithic sites of Pech-Merle in France (around 25,000 years old) and the Altamira Cave in Spain (around 16,500-15,000 BC). The Lascaux Cave contains an image of a horse painted in yellow ochre, estimated to be 17,300 years old.
