The composition of the watercolors uses finely ground, concentrated pigments and highly purified gum arabic. A high degree of grinding on a ceramic paint grinder gives transparent, pure and saturated colors. The watercolors mix well, are easily washed out and have high lightfastness.

A black pigment isolated from shungite rocks (Precambrian carbon-containing rocks). The only deposit of this rock was found in Karelia, and its modern name shungite was named after the Karelian village of Shunga (on the northern shore of Lake Onega). Since ancient times, shungite has been used to obtain a particularly durable black paint.

The unique antiseptic and healing properties of shungite stone attracted the attention of Peter I, who founded the Marcial Waters resort in Karelia and allegedly obliged his soldiers to carry a piece of shungite with them - upon contact with the stone, the water was purified and acquired healing properties.

Shungite was formed from organic bottom sediments - sapropel - approximately 600 million years ago, and according to some sources - 2 billion years ago. These organic sediments, covered from above by new layers, gradually compacted and dehydrated. Under the influence of compression and high temperature, the process of metamorphosis took place.

As a result of this process, amorphous carbon was formed in the form of globules characteristic of shungite. In terms of chemical state, this is a type of technical carbon.

Pigment shungite gives a very deep black color, but is not used as widely as gas soot or technical carbon.

Due to the heterogeneity of the composition and the different content of carbonaceous matter (from 5 to 98%, the rest of the rock is clay and siliceous matter), there is a wide variety of shungite rocks, differing both in appearance and in chemical and physical-mechanical properties. Shungite also contains silicon oxides (up to 40-60%), aluminum (4-10%), iron (2-5%), and potassium (1-4%).

The mineral is quite hard, but like no other natural pigment it produces a deep black color with a bluish tint.

Shungite has high chemical resistance (to all acids and alkalis at 25°C); it is light- and weather-resistant.

Hardness on the Mohs scale 3.5 - 4

Density, kg/m3 2250 - 2280

A unique property of shungite is that this rock is non-magnetic, but electrically conductive. Shungite paint can be used to paint heaters, antistatic and grounding elements.

Shungite, obsolete synonym "slate stone", "touchstone", lydite or paragon is a Precambrian rock consisting mainly of carbon and occupying an intermediate position between anthracite and graphite in composition and properties.
