The composition of the watercolor uses finely ground pigments and highly purified gum arabic. A high degree of grinding on a ceramic paint grinder gives transparent, pure and saturated colors. Watercolor mixes well, is easily washed.

The coloring base is cadmium sulfide - CdS. Cadmium was discovered in 1817 by the German chemist Friedrich Stromeyer. The beginning of the use of cadmium sulfide - 1817, production - 1829. Widely used in painting since the middle of the 19th century. When used on oil film formers, the pigment is reddish-yellow. When heated, it reversibly acquires a red color. Insoluble in alkalis and dilute acids. Very atmospheric and heat-resistant (up to approximately 800 ° C). Low toxicity. It is not recommended to use it with pigments containing lead and copper compounds (black sulfides are formed).

In nature, CdS occurs in small quantities as a mineral, dark yellow or orange griconite, which was used as a pigment 2000 years ago.

Heat-resistant in air up to 300°C (without oxygen access up to 700°C).

• Cadmium yellows are unstable in combination with copper pigments and, to a lesser extent, with iron oxide ochers and mars. The least durable are light grades of cadmium yellow, dark ones are more durable.

• Mixtures of cadmium paints with ultramarine, violet madder and Van Dyck give them a lightening, but the paints retain their color.

• The entire group of cadmium paints is prone to erosion in an aging film, which was noted in mixtures of cadmium paints with cobalt, manganese, ultramarine, light ocher and volkonskoite.

• Beware of cadmium yellow compounds with the following pigments: strontium yellow, dark ochres, mars browns, natural umber, violet madder, ultramarine, and burnt bone.

Cadmium pigments are used in the manufacture of artist's paints, and due to their high heat resistance, they are used in the production of ceramic paints, wallpaper, candles, wax crayons, and soap.
